Education

Richard started his professional career in Accounting and Financial Management in 1977 while attending the University of Natal and University of South Africa, from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Economics and Business Economics - Financial Management, Marketing, Purchasing Management; Human Resource Management.

He then proceeded to graduate with a Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree specializing in Financial Management – Advanced Strategy Budgeting and Forecasting, Advanced Investment Management, Advanced Business Financial Management, and a thesis on the Financial Management of a Multi-National Chemical Manufacturing and Marketing Company.

Subsequently, Richard embarked on studies through the Canadian Securities Institute (C.S.I.) to become a IIROC (now CIRO) licensed Wealth Advisor. Concurrently, he became a Life Accident and Sickness Insurance Agent through the Life Underwriters Association of Canada (LUAC).

In addition to the minimum requirements to become a IIROC (now CIRO) licensed Wealth Advisor in Canada, Richard pursued several Continuing Education courses through the Canadian Securities Institute, namely:

  • Business Taxation and Planning;
  • Business Succession Planning;
  • EFTs: Opportunities and Risks;
  • Hedge fund Essentials for Today’s Professionals;
  • Trust Structures;
  • Planning Strategies for Seniors: The Home Income Plan Advantage;
  • Financial Planning For Snowbirds; and,
  • Certificate in Retirement Strategy.

Several more Continuing Education Courses relevant to Richard’s role as an Wealth Advisor were also attended and completed successfully.

Career

For the first twenty years of his career, Richard held progressively Senior Accounting and Financial Management positions with major industrial corporations in construction, chemical manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries, as Senior Accountant and Financial Officer for a major Pension Fund, as Chief Financial Officer of a Canadian Bank.

During part of this period, Richard gained experience in Construction Contract Negotiation and Administration Management and Trade Union Dispute Resolution with the construction conglomerate he worked for; with the multi-billion Dollar Pension Fund, he also gained experience in Institutional Real Estate Investment Portfolio Management, Acquisition and Sale of Institutional Real Estate Investments and Institutional Partnerships.

When Richard decided finally to transition to the Investment Industry, he invested a few years in the Equity Research teams of Wood Gundy and Scotia McLeod, working in Retail and Merchandising Equity Research, Paper and Forest Products Equity Research, and Real Estate Investment Banking.
Richard started to practice as a Wealth Advisor and Broker, and Life Insurance Agent in 1997. Since then, Richard and his team have built a strong professional practice serving corporate client, institutional clients, private clients, business owners, and professionals.

Family

Richard and Ana Bruton with their son Damian have worked together to create Bruton Investment Group since 1997. Richard and Ana have two sons and a daughter. Richard, Ana and their youngest child enjoy outdoor activities and sports, sailing, “glam camping”, kayaking, curling and lawn bowling, cycling, travelling, reading, history, and the arts.

 

Community service

From a young age, Richard has dedicated himself to community support through sponsorship of several sporting events, the arts, and by assuming positions on the Board of Directors and Executive of charitable and cultural organizations as well as Provincial and Federal Electoral District Associations.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of Richard’s contributions to communities across Ontario and to Canada, he received a Commendation from the Government of Canada, and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Principally as a result of satisfied client referrals, Richard Bruton’s team has been recognized as #1 for growth in Assets Under Management (AUM) and Growth In Production.

Richard has been received several plaques, letters of recognition and gratitude from the organizations he founded, for being a volunteer on Boards of Directors and Executive of charitable and non-profit organizations.
