It is our firm belief that one of the secrets to successful investing is to consistently use a simple, but well-defined process. Our process involves applying the following five steps.
The answers to two simple questions – what do you want to do with your money, and when do you want to do it – gives us a good idea of your objectives.
The answers found in step 1 allow us to set the basic guidelines for the management of your portfolio. Together we select the basic asset classes to included in your portfolio, and the proper weighting for each. Based on how directly you wish to be involved in the day-to-day management of your investments, we also decide on whether to used managed products, and to what degree.
We then choose the individual stocks, bonds, managed products or other vehicles that will give your portfolio its exposure and proper weighting to the asset classes decided upon in step 2. This is where we lean a lot on our experience, as well as all of the research material National Bank Financial makes available to us.
Arguably the simplest step, this is where we put steps 2 and 3 into practice, by making the actual investments in the individual securities and products we have chosen.
Investment is a bit like cooking – once you have the right ingredients in the pot, it still has to be carefully watched. By ongoing monitoring, we mean rebalancing the portfolio when its asset mix moves too far from our reference points, selling securities that have reached their target prices and identifying new investment opportunities that fit the parameters of your investment policy statement. This step also involves meeting with you periodically to give you updates on your portfolio and enquiring as to whether your personal situation has changed in any way that might require modifying our approach.
